Douglas Wunder is well known for his amazing titanium creations. This workshop brings you into his world which encompasses the design and engineering that goes into his work, the techniques he has perfected and how you can adapt these approaches to incorporate other metals into your designs.  Students are free to work in silver or titanium or a combination of the two. The workshop will explore exciting and alternative ways to attach, fit and fasten small objects together. The emphasis will be to create a series of metal elements that flow and function continuously and transition into a bracelet, so get ready to wear your designer hat. Imaginative riveting and hand sawing and many techniques will be explored.  You will then add purpose and personality to your finished piece by adding a clasp that is integral to the design. Coloring techniques of titanium will also be discussed.

Participants are encouraged to come with an imaginative, experimental approach to jewelry making.

This workshop will be presented in demonstration style. Participants watch and listen however don't actually have to engage in any metal work during the sessions. There will be plenty of discussion and those viewing are encouraged to ask questions and interact. Workshop sessions will be recorded so there will be opportunities for review.

About Douglas

The seeds for jewelry design began at an early age and took form in college. When Doug was five, he started making plastic models. With continued years of interest, he developed many skills for constructing miniature objects and installations. In college at The University of Iowa, Doug gravitated to metalsmithing and jewelry design. He developed a unique style that focused on abstract imagery with the use of titanium and cold connections. By the time Doug graduated in 1989, the years of making models and his education in metalworking provided opportunities in professional jewelry design.

He started his career by wholesaling his jewelry at galleries, museum gift shops, and special interest stores in the United States. Since 1995, he has shown his work at top-rated craft shows and art festivals across the country such as the Atlanta Contemporary Jewelry Show, the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, CO, and the St. Louis Art Fair. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions. Throughout his career Doug has received his share of recognitions, including a Saul Bell Design Awards in 2018 and a Pennsylvania Art of the State award in 2019.

Doug has authored magazine articles for Art Jewelry and Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist Magazine, and he has been represented in many books and periodicals. He also conducts virtual workshops and travels to colleges, art centers, and guilds sharing his perspectives on jewelry design.

Douglas Wunder lives in Kutztown Pennsylvania with his wife Amy and daughter Annabel.
